How San Leandro CA came into Existence

alameda county map locationIn early years, California’s name is synonymous to gold because of the Gold Rush which happened in 1849. Gold Rush was actually the reason why California was nicknamed the Golden State. The California gold rush led to remarkable social and demographic change with large scale immigration across the nation and even abroad which led to economic and population boom. To date, California populace comprises 11.91% of the total US population making it the most populous state.

Considering the promise of wealth and prosperity, gold was not that ample for all gold miners because of high competition among other gold-seekers. Those who were not successful in the gold fields were forced to move to the Bay area. One bay area known for its quiet and diverse community is San Leandro.

Spanish soldier Capt. Pedro Fages and the Spanish Catholic priest father Crespi first discovered San Leandro on March 20, 1772. The land was subsequently distributed to other retired Spanish soldiers, one of whom is Don Jose Joaquin Estudillo which was granted 7,000 acres of land which he named Rancho San Leandro.

San Leandro was integrated as a town on March 21, 1872, exactly 100 years after its first discovery. The commerce has since developed. Factories sprouted and business ventures grew earnestly. Thanks to the cheap transportation offered going to and from the area. Even with industrialization, agriculture continued to be an important industry in San Leandro up until the early 1900s. One of the most well-known crops is cherries.

By late 1960s, San Leandro was so occupied and diversified with almost no open land available for big business ventures or additional occupation. Development continues to expand which gave birth to shopping malls, light industrial, service industries and hi-tech manufacturers.

To date, San Leandro is known as one of the most diverse neighborhood cities in California with its rich cultural heritage and a wonderful weather throughout the year, San Leandro is a great place to live, work and have fun.
